Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation

We like to give back to our communities who have supported us over the years.  We have recently contributed to the The Fred Smither Centre for Orthopedic Care at the Dartmouth General Hospital.  We linked our donation to the number of real estate transactions completed per year and plan to continue to support over the coming years.  The plans for improved hospital are impressive and the new Orthopedic Centre is state of the art; something we can be proud of.

ABOUT THE REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT

The Dartmouth General Hospital (DGH) is embarking on a Redevelopment Project that will see major facilities renovations and expansion, and the addition of new equipment and technology. Our $13 million Above and Beyond Capital Campaign is leveraging $137 million from the provincial government for a total investment of $150 million in our facility. Our project is a key part of the overall QEII Redevelopment project, a multi-site plan to build a modernized acute care system.

A new three-story addition, the Neville J. Gilfoy Wing, opened to patients and visitors in December 2019 .

This is home to:

Eight new operating rooms with two designed specifically for orthopedics in the Fred Smithers Centre for Orthopedic Care
An Ambulatory Care and Endoscopy Centre with eighteen new clinic rooms
A new Medical Device Reprocessing area

Elsewhere in the hospital, renovation and retrofitting will take place. This will result in:

48 new inpatient beds on the vacant 5 th floor
A new front entrance and reconfigured lobby
Relocated and expanded ICU
New six-bed Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU)
An expanded and renovated Diagnostic Imaging Department

Looking at the Impact

Better integration of Surgical Services across the HRM
Concentration of Orthopedic Surgery - majority of primary joint replacement surgeries for patients from all over HRM are to be done at DGH
Shorter waitlists and reduced wait times for orthopedic and endoscopic procedures
Redeveloping existing space to increase our capacity
Improved patient flow to enhance patient privacy
Increased patient comfort and improved aesthetic

DGH Foundation's Role

The Foundation’s role in the DGH redevelopment and expansion project will be to create awareness and visibility surrounding the project, and to most importantly, raise funds to help make it possible.
